Técnicos hablan de dos El Niño: oceánico y costero

El Niño es el evento climático de más incidencia en el planeta, relativo a una franja caliente en el océano Pacífico, cerca a Nueva Zelanda, que por efecto del viento y otros patrones, se estira acercándose a las costas de América del Sur. No es cíclico.

Los técnicos del Instituto Oceanográfico de la Armada (Inocar), según parámetros internacionales, sitúan al punto crítico entre 6.000 y 7.000 kilómetros de la costa nacional.

Por eso manejan índices para un El Niño oceánico y otro costero. Este último no superaría los 2.000 kilómetros.

Edwin Pinto, jefe del Departamento de Ciencias del Mar, refiere que los entes de investigación NASA y NOOA bien pueden calificar a El Niño como extraordinario, por lo que sucede a distancia lejana; pero esa no es la realidad del Ecuador. Con él concuerda Raúl Mejía, coordinador regional del Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología (Inamhi). “Sí existe un evento a nivel global, está impactando a otras partes del globo, pero a nivel local las características son distintas”.

En el invierno 1997-1998, el evento climático se presentó con lluvias intensas. En la vía a la costa, la crecida del río La Camarona, en Cerecita, cortó el paso por semanas.

“Las lluvias solo son parte de El Niño”, refiere Pinto y pide que la prensa no compare los eventos de años anteriores porque ninguno es similar a otro.

Los técnicos, durante un seminario en el Inocar dirigido a la prensa, presentaron registros de temperatura del mar, precipitaciones, entre otros datos.

Mejía sostiene que de acuerdo con las condiciones actuales, habrá lluvias más seguidas en febrero próximo. Dice que actualmente, por una corriente de viento frente a la costa ecuatorial, no se desarrollan las condiciones para las lluvias, pese a que por incidencia de El Niño hay evidencia de que aumentó la temperatura del mar.

Esta corriente cálida incide en la prevalencia o alejamiento de especies marinas. (I)
